A seventh-place finish in 1965
coming off a world chanpionship season led to many changes on the
field for the St. Louis Cardinals. Perhaps the biggest change was made
on October 20 when team captain Ken Boyer was traded to the New York
Mets for third baseman Charley Smith and left-handed pitcher Al
Jackson. "But the Mets are in last place," cried 12-year-old Sue Boyer
about her father's destination. But he tried to keep a positive
outlook. "There are a lot more worse things in life," he said. "What if
nobody wanted you."
At the time, it was the biggest trade in Mets history. Bing Devine, the
Cardinals general manager who called off the trade of a younger Boyer
to Philadelphia, was now GM for the Mets. He saw in the older Boyer a
player who could bring veteran leadership to his young team and maybe
regain his MVP form.
